V&A Dundee Staffroom

Commercial Staff Office
Dundee, Scotland
Completed 2024

The V&A Dundee Staffroom is designed to offer an inviting and relaxing environment for all staff members. Utilizing natural materials such as timber and incorporating colors inspired by nature, the space aims to create a healthy, welcoming, and restful atmosphere. The room serves as an antidote to the hustle and bustle of the museum, providing a serene escape for staff to recharge.

Upon entering, staff are greeted by a fully accessible kitchen area centered around a large dining table. This space features new food and drink preparation facilities and ample storage, making it a practical and enjoyable area for staff to gather and unwind. The unique sloped wall has been ingeniously used to create informal seating areas, framed by a slatted timber screen that enhances the natural light from the existing windows.

The central feature of the staffroom is a stunning plant wall that provides a natural separation between the kitchen and the relaxed seating area beyond. This green partition not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also promotes well-being by improving air quality and reducing stress levels.

A raised stepped seating area has been designed to utilize the slope of the wall, offering a versatile space for presentations, reading, or simply taking a break. This area provides easy access to the windows, allowing staff to enjoy the views and natural light.

In line with KSA's commitment to sustainability, the project emphasizes the use of locally sourced materials and skilled local craftsmen. Existing furniture and kitchen units have been re-purposed and upcycled, reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly practices. The re-upholstered furniture and locally crafted items add a unique touch to the space, reflecting the rich craftsmanship of the region.
