Drum Laundry

Renovations to Laundry Building
Completed 2014
Client - National Trust for Scotland

The old laundry at Drum was suffering from water ingress and becoming unfit to open to the public.  A project of repairs was carried out whilst trying to retain as much of the historic fabric of the building as possible.  The roof and floor of the laundry were constructed from the roughly hewn original timbers, most likely felled on the estate and starting to fail.

KSA collaborated with the engineer on a series of interventions to strengthen the existing floor joists with steel fins, whilst retaining the original structure.  The roof was replaced with Douglas Fir trusses and re-slated, and the doors and windows refurbished.  Lime pointing repairs were also carried out to the walls, skews and chimneys.
