The Lunan Bay café was commissioned and built by the farmer to provide a facility for visitors to the beach. The building sits in a rural context with the fields, farm sheds, and the beach carpark around it. The materials used to fit into this context with corrugated cladding to the roofs, Scottish larch cladding offset by large areas of glazing.
The concept of the building was simple with one big space on the beachside set out on a structural grid of 4m. A simple solid block sits at the rear, anchoring the building and holding all the utilitarian spaces.
The shape of the building in section is the main design element, with the three roofs creating different shaped spaces. The clerestory windows to the rear let in afternoon light to the main space whilst the full height glazing faces east towards the sea. A covered veranda with timber steps down to the sand defines the entrance area and provides an area to sit outside and drink coffee.
