Scottish Home of the Year 2023 - Finalist
Our architectural design for this residence is a harmonious blend of three intersecting forms, each distinct yet interconnected, firmly rooted into the inclining terrain. The uppermost structure, a cantilevered wing, offers sweeping vistas of the North Sea and St Cyrus beach, a visual feast that can be enjoyed from the extended balcony.
The two lower wings, each set at varying elevations in alignment with the natural rise of the site, demarcate the public and private zones of the dwelling. The front-facing spaces, designed for social interactions, are distinctly separated from the secluded family wing at the rear.
The material palette is a thoughtful mix of Denfind stone, natural larch cladding, and crisp white render, each chosen to highlight the unique characteristics of the three building components. These materials not only provide a striking contrast to each other but also contribute to the creation of sheltered outdoor spaces around the dwelling. These spaces are designed to capture the sun's rays at different intervals throughout the day, creating dynamic light and shadow play.
This design approach ensures that the residence is not just a structure, but a living, breathing entity that interacts with its environment and the changing patterns of sunlight, offering its inhabitants a unique living experience.
